Financial Times Interview, Five fascinating London shops for collectors of all stripes
Under a train-shuddered railway arch between Peckham and New Cross, 19uj resurrects an unlikely crowd: Falklands-era Argentine diving suits canoodle with a handwoven 1930s beekeeper’s outfit; a 1940s straitjacket rubs up against CC41 British wartime clothing. The shop is run by 24-year-old Solomon Upton (the name is old military code for the initials of his full name, Solomon Upton-Jubber), who is already a respected figure among costume designers and fashion archivists (some of his pieces are currently on tour with the band Wet Leg, and have previously been worn by Drake and The 1975). Upton began collecting and trading garments while studying at University of the Arts London, selling pieces from his home, where researchers from Burberry and Alexander McQueen would pitch up looking for inspiration.
