1890s-1900s Tropical Pith Helmet In Beautiful Faded Green

Pith helmet with solar topee

Size 58cm

The pith helmet originated in the early 19th century as European colonial powers expanded into tropical regions in Africa and Asia, where intense sun and heat required practical headgear. Made from the lightweight, spongy pith of the sola plant (or later cork), the helmet was designed to provide ventilation and sun protection. It became closely associated with the British Empire, particularly through its use by soldiers in India under the rule of the British East India Company and later the British Army. By the mid-to-late 19th century, it was standard issue for troops serving in hot climates, including during campaigns such as the Anglo-Zulu War. Other European powers, including France and Germany, adopted similar designs for their colonial forces. Although its military use declined after World War II, the pith helmet remains a cultural symbol of 19th-century imperialism and exploration.
