These incredibly made clogs are a great example of workwear/practical protective footwear of the period. An ideal example for display and historical education.
In England, clogs were traditionally worn as durable and practical workwear, especially in industries where workers needed sturdy, protective footwear. Made with wooden soles and leather or fabric uppers, clogs were commonly used in factories, mills, mines, and agricultural settings from the 18th to early 20th centuries. The thick wooden soles provided insulation from cold, damp floors and offered protection against sharp objects or heavy materials. In industrial settings like cotton mills, clog-wearing workers could be identified by the distinctive sound of their footsteps on stone floors. Over time, as rubber-soled boots became more accessible, clogs fell out of favor as workwear but remained part of traditional dress in some northern communities.
