British CC41 1940s Utility Windowpane Overcoat

Single breasted windowpane overcoat in navy blue with red windowpane

A great scarce coat from the period showcasing the properties of a utility made item, featuring half lined rayon and only one sleeve button to save materials.

CC41 (Civilian Clothing 1941) was a British government initiative introduced during World War II to regulate clothing production and ensure fair distribution of resources amid wartime shortages. Launched in 1941 by the Board of Trade, the CC41 scheme imposed strict guidelines on fabric use, garment construction, and design simplicity to conserve materials for the war effort. Clothing marked with the distinctive "CC41" utility label met government standards for durability and efficiency, eliminating unnecessary embellishments while maintaining quality. The initiative also extended to furniture and footwear, promoting practicality over excess. CC41 played a crucial role in supporting rationing policies and ensuring that civilians had access to affordable, well-made clothing during wartime austerity. After the war, as restrictions eased, the label gradually disappeared, but it remains an important symbol of wartime economy and British fashion history.
