Brushstroke camouflage originated in the United Kingdom during World War II, designed to disrupt the human silhouette using bold, irregular strokes that mimic natural elements like vegetation and shadows. The pattern was later adopted and adapted by several countries, including Belgium. In the early 1950s, the Belgian Army developed its own distinctive variant of brushstroke camo, known as the "Belgian Denison" pattern, influenced heavily by the British Paratrooper smocks of the war. This camouflage was primarily used by Belgian paratroopers and special forces during the Congo Crisis and other post-colonial conflicts. Its bold, high-contrast strokes in green, brown, and tan proved effective in jungle environments, marking it as both a practical and iconic military design of the Cold War era.
