French TAP 47/56 Paratrooper Smock With Scab Darning
The TAP 47/56 smock was a combat jacket used by French paratroopers (Troupes Aéroportées) during the mid-20th century, particularly in the First Indochina War and Algerian War. It was an evolution of the original TAP 47 smock, introduced in 1947, and modified in 1956 to improve durability and functionality. Made from heavy cotton canvas, it featured a distinctive short cut, large cargo pockets, and epaulets, designed for airborne troops operating in rugged environments. The TAP 47/56 was heavily influenced by British and American paratrooper uniforms but adapted to French military needs. It became iconic for its use by elite units like the 1er RCP (1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment)and the 2e REP (2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment) of the French Foreign Legion. Despite being phased out by later designs, the TAP 47/56 remains highly collectible among militaria enthusiasts and continues to inspire modern tactical and fashion wear.
