Japanese Traditional Cotton Tabi Work Boot
The tabi, traditional Japanese split-toe socks, have a history dating back to at least the 15th century during the Muromachi period. Inspired by earlier Chinese and Korean footwear, tabi were originally made from leather and worn by the samurai and aristocracy. By the Edo period (1603–1868), cotton tabi became widespread among commoners, often dyed white for formal occasions or indigo for daily wear. The distinctive split-toe design allowed for better balance and was essential for wearing zori and geta sandals. In the early 20th century, tabi evolved into jika-tabi, a rubber-soled version worn by laborers, farmers, and even construction workers. Today, tabi remain a cultural symbol in traditional Japanese attire, martial arts, and festivals.
