The V-gusset on a crewneck sweatshirt, also called a V-stitch or V-insert, originally served both a functional and aesthetic purpose in early sportswear design. Introduced in the early 20th century, particularly by brands like Champion, the V-gusset was meant to reinforce the neckline, preventing it from stretching out over time. It also helped absorb sweat, as many early sweatshirts were used by athletes and laborers.
Typically made from a ribbed fabric, the V-gusset added extra elasticity to the collar, making it easier to pull on and off while maintaining its shape. Over time, as fabric technology improved, the gusset became less of a necessity and more of a design element, giving modern crewnecks a classic, vintage-inspired look. Today, while some sweatshirts still feature a functional gusset, most retain it purely for heritage styling.
This is a high quality Japanese reproduction in a cropped cut made with a mid-weight jersey cotton.
