Eddie Bauer, an American outdoorsman and entrepreneur, founded the Eddie Bauer brand in 1920 as a small sporting goods store in Seattle, Washington. In 1936, after nearly dying from hypothermia on a winter fishing trip, Bauer invented the first quilted down jacket, called the "Skyliner," which revolutionized cold-weather gear by providing lightweight yet highly effective insulation. He patented the design in 1940, and during World War II, his company supplied down-filled flight jackets to the U.S. military. The Eddie Bauer brand grew into a renowned outdoor clothing and gear company, known for its innovation, quality, and rugged style.
