Rare British 1940s Cyclist Jacket
British 1940s Cyclist Jacket
This jacket was made just down the road in Peckham, a light weight summer jacket of the period in a blouson cut with army battle dress buttons and elasticated waist band.
The early cyclist jacket was a functional and stylish garment designed for mobility and protection, reflecting the growing popularity of cycling as both a sport and a mode of transportation. Typically made from wool or gabardine, it provided insulation and breathability, with some versions featuring waxed cotton for water resistance. The jacket was often cropped at the waist to prevent interference while pedaling, with high collars and snug fastenings—usually buttons or zippers—to shield against wind. Practical details like rear pockets allowed riders to carry essentials, an early precursor to modern cycling jerseys. Some designs incorporated reflective elements or contrasting piping for visibility. As cycling clubs flourished across Europe, the cyclist jacket became a staple for long-distance riders and urban commuters alike, blending practicality with a distinctive, streamlined aesthetic.
