The Vietnam jungle fatigues were developed in the early 1960s as part of the U.S. Army’s Tropical Combat Uniform program to meet the demands of jungle warfare in Southeast Asia. Made from lightweight ripstop or poplin cotton, they were designed for breathability, quick drying, and durability. The uniform featured a looser fit, slanted chest pockets for accessibility, reinforced elbows and knees for durability, and adjustable waist tabs for comfort. Initially introduced in 1962, the design evolved through three patterns, improving fabric strength and pocket configuration. By the late 1960s, they became the standard combat uniform for U.S. troops in Vietnam. After the war, elements of the jungle fatigues influenced later U.S. military uniforms, such as the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU).
